Thomas asks…
Can I use our bone china for everyday use?
We received bone china for our wedding. We were planning on using the plates and cups for everyday use, however someone just told me that it'll scratch really easy, and that it should only be used for special occasions. Is it durable enough for every day use? Thanks!

Ling answers:
Yes. You just run the danger of breaking a piece as the more it is used the more likely it can be damaged. No matter if you use it only on special occasions or everyday it will get scratched. Ask yourself would you be disappointed it never got used or that it got damaged because you enjoyed using it. How is is decorated? Overtime it can fade especially if it is washed in a dish washer.
Just to throw a spanner in the works - it can get damaged just sitting in the cupboard. China does get brittle from non use and can simply crack without anyone actually doing anything to it.
Honestly only you can answer the question. What I can say is that it was given to you to enjoy and if using it everyday gives you joy and you don't mind that it may get damaged then using it is the right thing to do.

What is the difference between bone china and break and chip-resistant glass dinnerware?
My fiance and I are registering for dinnerware and I right away knew I wanted Corell's chip/break resistant products, which are apparently glass... The guy helping us register at Bed Bath and Beyond is telling us to consider bone china. Im just wondering which is best. Thanks!

Ling answers:
Negative, I work at BBB. and Bone China is the strongest most Durable. A Cup can support at 300 pound man's body weight- saw it with my very own eyes! Bone china can me microwaved and dishwashed, as long as there is no aluminum lining on it. Also, china is starting to come in more contemporary patterns so..he is right by asking you to consider china.

Daniel asks…
Is bone china really that much better than porcelain?
I opted to get porcelain dishes in place of the bone china dishes that we originally registered for because they looked pretty much the same to me and the price was much better.
Am I going to be disappointed?
I know that bone china is lighter and more translucent, but I didn't really see these as necessary qualities. Am I missing something?

Ling answers:
This is a pretty cool question. It depends on what you are going to use them for. Remember that porcelain does not let bacteria gow on it. It is completely non-porous. Bone china, while much more radiant, can break easier. Not much easier though. Fine china is for display, while you can feel comfortable eating off of porcelain for sanitary and safety reasons.

Need help with some bone china that i have been given.
Its a full tea set in brown, gold and white.
When the tea vups are held up to the light you can see the head of a asian lady.
The tea pot has lucky stamped on the bottom.
What make is and wheres it from?

Ling answers:
20thCentury Taisho Eggshell Kutani Lithopane, Japanese. The Lithopane is referring to the picture in the botton of the cups and jugs. I think I must have a similar set to you. My mother in law lived in japan for 8 yrs after the war and this was one of the beautiful china sets she brought home to Australia.
