I have antique furniture, how can I figure out how much it's worth?
I have one coffee table and two end tables that my father got about 30 years ago. He bought them from an old man that was in the military. The old man said he got the tables hand-made for him in China 20 years prior to that for $2,200 total.. which means the tables are around 50 years old right now. They're made out of teak wood, and they have jade tops. (Kinda like marble tops except its jade, and instead of it covering the entire top of the table it only covers about 80% of it in the middle.) Also, there's some sort of chinese lettering written on the bottom of the table and we're not sure what it means. Anyway, I'm wanting to know what I can do to try and figure out the price?? Its very beautiful furniture and in good condition.
The simplest to determine Antique Furniture Values is to do research. For example, you must be able to tell the difference between Tudor and Queen Anne. Your research will also allow you to know which pieces of furniture you find are American antique and which are European antique furniture.
From research, you will also learn about the eras from which different antique pieces come. This will allow you to determine the age of pieces. Keep in mind that while knowledge from research is a powerful tool, it truly is only half of the battle. It often requires a trained eye to determine authentic items from reproductions these days.
Don't worry, though. There are some trick that experienced antique furniture hunters know that you can use to find great antique bargains.
The first thing to do is to examine an item to make sure that it is a quality item. Look over the piece and check to see if the drawers open and close easily, the doors are secure to the hinges, and that there is no obvious damage (i.e. cracks) or missing pieces.
Next, make certain that the antique furniture item is structurally strong. Has the piece been refinished? Is it all original wood? Now, obviously is you are looking to buy an item that is a century old, there will be evident wear and tear. You want to decide whether the item will withstand the first time someone takes a seat on it.
Due to the years of wear and tear that a hundred year old piece of antique furniture experiences, its edges should be relatively smooth. If you find rough edges on the piece, the piece might actually be younger than it initially looked. Additionally, closely-examine the piece's finish... is it clean with vibrant colors? That is evidence of quality craftsmanship. Good Luck
