Courtaulds
History
Foundation
The company was founded by George Courtauld and his cousin Peter Taylor (1790-1850) in 1794 as a silk crepe Pebmarsh and textile business in north Essex as George Courtauld trade & Co. In 1810, his American-born son Samuel Courtauld was managing his own factory silk in Braintree, Essex.
In 1818, George Courtauld returned to America, leaving Samuel Courtauld and Taylor to expand the business now known as Courtauld and Taylor, by building new factories in Halstead and Bocking. Courtauld in 1825 installed a steam engine at the Bocking mill, and then install power looms in Halstead. Its factories, however, remains heavily dependent on young workers in 1838, over 92% of its workforce were women.
In 1850, Courtauld employed over 2,000 people in its three factories of silk, and had recruited partners including (in 1828) to his brother, George Courtauld II (1802-1861) and in 1849 - fellow Unitarian social reformer Peter Alfred Taylor (1819-1891 son of Peter Taylor, who died the following year). At that time, Courtauld was a very rich man, but also suffering from deafness. He planned to spend more time at his country property Gosfield Hall near Halstead, but could not convince himself to retire, and continued to play an active role in the company until just before his death in March 1881.
His nephew Samuel Courtauld (1876-1947) became chairman of the Courtauld company in 1921, but is chiefly remembered today as the founder of the Courtauld Institute of Art in London. William Julien Courtauld was also a benefactor of the arts: art gave the camera Essex County Council in Chelmsford and Braintree Town Hall in the 1930's.
Expansion
Courtaulds had entered the market for cellulosic materials (Viscose and acetate) in North America with the creation of the American Viscose Corporation (AVC) in 1909. Investment in the U.S. was a great success, but sale was executed in 1941 as part of the negotiations that preceded the Lend-Lease.
Meanwhile in Europe, expanded its business Courtaulds cellulosic materials both directly and through joint ventures, including British cellophane.
Courtaulds in 1945 remains one of the four groups that dominated the synthetic fiber industry or artificial in Europe (counting the VGF German and Dutch AKU as a group, and including also the CTA - later merged in Rhone-Poulenc ~ in France and Snia Viscose in Italy). Courtaulds activities in continental Europe was a company wholly owned fiber, viscose factory employs about 3,000 people in France, a 50% in a similar business in Germany (the other 50% were part of AGV, the main competitor), and a minority that controlled 20% of the voting capital of the Italian firm Snia Viscose, also a whole viscose fiber producer. This activity was expanded to 1960's, when these products were replaced by the new developments
After World War II
Courtaulds was one of the first companies in the United Kingdom to establish an economics department. In three decades following World War II that the department made significant contributions to the understanding of investment appraisal and the formulation of British - And later Europeans - trade policy. The role also played an important role in the development of Courtaulds for a quiet place, a producer of fiber synthetic world's largest textile manufacturer, a position the company achieved in the mid 1970's. The economics department then influenced in the early stages of the subsequent extensive restructuring of the company, culminating in the separation of its textile industry as an independent company quoted to March 1990
Separated
In late 1980, the manufacture of clothing was quickly moved to South East Asia and China. Courtaulds had closed many its UK plants and moved production to new sites based in Asia, but its main customer Marks and Spencer wanted better prices. Second, its main benefit came from its chemicals business, which was being withheld by the textile company.
In 1990, Courtaulds plc was divided into two parts:
Courtaulds textiles - fiber manufacturing and clothing
Courtaulds plc - the chemicals business
Courtaulds plc
The global chemical industry was on a clear recession, and the company faced difficult times. The company employs 23,000 and had 2 million (U.S. $ 4 billion) in annual revenue, with 30% United States, Europe 40% and 15% in Asia and the Pacific. Huismans Sipka CEO the company had focused on streamlining and cost reduction: We to reduce costs. We can not count the sales growth for us to pay more or allows us to buy more of our favorite things. In 1991, the company closed viscose plant in France, allowing its other plants to increase production to 93% capacity, compared with an industry average of 75%. This allowed the share price to double in the first three years following the split.
Although prices were stable, the company had a generator earning potential in Tencel, Courtaulds Fiber man had spent 100 million and 10 years entering the market. As viscose, Tencel is made from cellulose derived from dissolved wood pulp. Although the production of rayon waste generates large amounts of sulfur, Tencel is made through a chemical process "closed loop" in which the solvent can be filtered and reused. The final product is much stronger than rayon and cotton, which allows a variety of ways and feels - The ultra denim jeans, but strong, shirts that feel like silk scarves for the monkey texture of cashmere.
To help your target expand your business, specifically in Asia and the Pacific, part of Courtaulds plc delivery of development in joint ventures, particularly with Akzo Nobel. In 2000, Akzo-Nobel a merger proposal, which the EU approved the sale subject to the Courtauld aerospace business.
In October 2000, PPG Industries announced it had agreed Courtaulds Aerospace bought 512.5 million U.S. dollars. Based in Glendale, California, aerospace business has annual sales of approximately $ 240 million (U.S.) employs 1,200 people. Sealants are manufactured in Glendale, California, and Shildon, England, coatings and sealants in Mojave, glass sealants Gloucester City, New Jersey; CA and coatings in Gonfreville, France. The company also operates 14 application support centers in North America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia.
Courtaulds Textiles
Courtaulds Textiles is the largest producer of Britain's lingerie and underwear. The organization employs about 20,000 people in 16 countries in Europe, North America and Asia, and has annual turnover exceeding 1 billion, 40% of which is obtained from the sale of Marks & Spencer. Markets its products under the cloud leading retailer worldwide and its own renowned brands including Aristoc, Berlei and Gossard, and Good. Additionally, Courtaulds Textiles was a network international companies and stretch lace fabric.
The business has spent most of their manufacturing jobs overseas, most of which is transferred into joint ventures for flexibility. Investments in Sri Lanka are joint venture with MAS Holdings (Pvt) Ltd, with an investment of 2 million that employs 2,000 people and underwear manufacturers free time for retailers like Victoria's Secret, Marks & Spencer, BHS and Hanro. A second joint venture employs 3.1million to 1,100 and only made men's underwear and baby clothes for Marks & Spencer. A phase 3 million expansion is underway which will increase the 700 hand Deposit work for 1100
In 2000, sought to acquire Sara Lee Courtaulds Textiles. A tough battle ensued and Courtaulds issued several measures against survive as independent of the company. However, the president of Sara Lee announced that the acquisition will strengthen our presence in Europe and gives us access to a wide range of exciting opportunities market - which increased its offer to 150 million, and won.
As the name disappeared in the merger Courtaulds chemistry with Akzo Nobel, the name of Courtaulds Textiles remains as a division of Sara Lee. However, to survive had to cut back jobs and fired many of its factories as it struggled with high costs Manufacturing in the UK and M & S, Stuart Rose under, while squeezing their suppliers. In February 2005, Brenda C. Barnes became the president and CEO of Sara Lee - and had a much more focused. Courtaulds was considered basically a British brand and company, and did not fit with a global business. Barnes agreed selling the business was right, and for some time tried to sell the business of Courtaulds, which had sales in 2005 of $ 560 million (302 million) but was hampered by Courtaulds pension deficit. Finally it was agreed with the regulator of pensions in the UK to increase payments on the deficit of 20m to 32m a year 2015. In May 2006, Sara Lee announced the sale of Courtaulds Textiles to PD Enterprise Limited, a leading supplier of clothing to Courtaulds Textiles. No sale price was announced, but it was announced that Sara Lee will continue to hold the 483 million U.S. dollars (260 million) pension deficit, and Brenda Barnes said Sara Lee had effectively "given" the unit.
