Fixing a broken runner antique rocker?
A child who should have known better was behind one of the corridors. I saved all the pieces, even some small bits. I have skilled hands - China can be repaired so that only "fit" into place. But this is a larger object. What kind of glue should I use? Instant bonus would be nice if I could be sure I have just right the first time but ... I would put China in a "sandbox", to keep it stable, while the glue cured. How can I tap a piece of furniture? More I should be doing? The runner breaks far enough that the chair is good for sitting and rocking moderate. It was then, and will never be useful to send someone flying around the room, as was attempted. (Sorry for the bad humor. I hope I never have reason for it.) So what I'm asking is a cosmetic in Functional repair site. I appreciate your comments and suggestions. Thank you.
I do not know where they are, but here in Texas the best wood glue available [In most hardware stores, or shopping for home improvements] and I've used is called "Gorilla Glue". It's great, but requires follow instructions "A la carte." From your description, I have understood that there are plenty of chips, so I suggest you not try to put it all back together in a single step, but do it very carefully and accurately, in sections, using scrap wood "boards" to press the pieces on a flat surface. As the tail is very tenacious, sticking splints, or clamps, to the part, so the use of wax paper between the workpiece and splints and braces. Even sticking to wax paper piece work, but what sticks can be removed with sandpaper of fine grain. Gorilla Glue tends to foam and expand during curing, thus requiring accurate parts SUBJECT to avoid being pushed apart. Moreover, once fixed, it is essential to squeeze the glue completely removed for the cure (s) may be installed at the end splintering of the main corridor. A previous reply said that if there was a break in the entire corridor, and therefore across the grain, but not as strong glue joint as the original. However, if the interruption involved a large amount of fragmentation, overlap and "interpolation" of the broken area chipping together with Gorilla Glue, will give a sufficiently strong as to the location of the break that you describe.
