Antique China Questions About Victorian Antiques Auction

Lisa asks…

So, I bought this antique sofa at an auction, and was wondering where it was made...?

I bought this really cool, purple velvet sofa at an auction a couple months ago, and was wondering if there was any way to find out who made it. It looks Victorian, because it has wooden arms and feet, but I don't think it is necessarily THAT old (it's in really good shape). There is a tag under the middle cushion that says "Super Sagless---Web Foundation -- Custom Built. Anybody have a clue what that means, or if that is some sort of existing furniture company?
I am just a little curious as to where this came from, and how old it may be. The velvet is pretty much in perfect condition, so I was thinking, if the couch actually is Victorian, it was likely reupholstered at some point....
Gabi -- why Canada? How did you come up with that?

Ling answers:

I typed in Google the information SUPERSAGLESS---WEB FOUNDATION---CUSTOM BUILD. And up came a furniture company named Leggitt and Platt . Try it and it may have more information for you.

Daniel asks…

Are antiques currently out of fashion?

I've been trying to liquidate my mother's estate without much success. I have tag sales and have even tried Ebay and Craig's List. Mom was an avid antique collector and bought a great deal of items (Depression, pressed & carnival glass, china, paintings, Victorian furniture, etc) at auctions and other estate sales back in the 1970's. Once in a while I have a joint tag sale with my aunt. She does well selling toiletries, person care items, household cleaners and office/school supplies. Hardly anyone even look at my items. What's going on?

Ling answers:

This probably is not want you want to hear but...yes. The antiques market is VERY bad right now. Ask any antique dealer. With today's concern over the economy and people having VERY little even to buy necessities, they are not out looking for trinkets and dust catchers. Added to the fact that older people are now trying to downsize and also trying to sell their possessions and heirlooms - the current antiques market is flooded and driving prices down. Because of this, older people are not looking to acquire things and young people nowadays want new, modern furnishings. Your aunt does well because she is selling practical items that people actually need.

James asks…

is this valuable?

is this an acutall valuable antique from the victorian period? http://www.trademe.co.nz/Antiques-collectables/Other/auction-87942053.htm

Ling answers:

NO

thats from the 30's

Robert asks…

Is there someone who can authenticate this antique from photo?

I found this frame on eBay. The auction states it's a Victorian. Is there an appraiser/professional who can tell from the pics? It doesn't have to be an actual Victorian, I'd just like to know if the design passes muster or is way off-track. Thanks in advance!

Ling answers:

It looks to be more of the Art Nouveau style which overlaps the Victorian Era but would not be considered Victorian in style. By the way, it is the Art Nouveau style that is used in the graphics that frame the photos of the bedstead on eBay. (If it has brass finials and details they must have been painted over.)

Helen asks…

What to do?

I have my rose antique victorian lamps on ebay being auctioned off. They have been on there for 2 days and no one bid on them yet. What to do? They are very pretty, and I am really trying to sell them and get what they are worth. I am moving this is why I am selling them.

Ling answers:

That's the thing about eBay... This week it might not sell, next week you might have a BOAT LOAD of BIDDERS.

But if you are totally NEW at this, you probably do not have any FEEDBACK. People might assume that you are selling something bogus, and don't want to take a chance on you.

If time is short, you should hold a TAG SALE in your front yard. Advertise in the local paper, and put dozens of signs in your area... They will come a-runnin'.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

My family and I are in the process of splitting up my parent’s estate. We have a handpainted Haviland Limoges tea set apparently from the 1870′s judging from the mark(roughly service for 8-10)which we were always told was very valuable and then another set from the 1950′s:Lenox Chanson. Based on quick internet searches it seems as though the Lenox is worth more. Can this be so?
