Daniel asks…
What light wood can be used to build furniture?
Can anyone tell me what are the light wood used to build furniture? Wood that are light but yet are tough to withstand a person's weight. For example, we may need to build a wooden chair for ourselves. The chair will need to be strong to withstand the person's weight. So what wood will most suit it?
I know teak is used to build furniture, but teak is so heavy, let alone expensive.

Ling answers:
Oak, ash, hickory, yellow pine, teak. White pine is probably a little on the "not so durable" side if you're using it for chairs, but if you want the industrial 2x4 look and you're on a budget, it could work for you.

Richard asks…
Is it safe to burn wood furniture?
I have an old computer desk, that I'm throwing out because it is damaged beyond use.
Could I just chop it up and burn it as firewood, or is furniture wood usually treated with chemicals that could be harmful?

Ling answers:
Most furniture has either finish or paint of some kind on them
and if that burns it can really damage your lungs
DONT DO IT
just take it to the dump or
cut it up and put one piece of it in your trash can every week
(that way the garbage dudes wont get mad at you)
hope that helps!!

Linda asks…
I want to build and design wood furniture. What type of degree should I be looking at getting?
I have (finally) decided on what I really want to do with my life- design and build wood and other natural material furniture. Unfortunately, I can't think of what field of Bachelor's degree would give me the credentials needed to break into that field. I hate designing with computers (but it is a necessary evil), but love the tactile response that wood offers. Any degree/certification suggestions?

Ling answers:
I would suggest doing an apprenticeship in cabinet making/furniture or just work at a place without doing a whole apprenticeship for a while so you get to know the practicle side of it and then go to tafe or uni to do a design related course

Lisa asks…
What is the best way to fix scuffs and scratches on wood furniture?
I recently bought new wood furniture, and I'm ashamed to say that I've already scuffed up my cocktail table by sliding my laptop and coaster on it. What is the best way to fix scuffs and scratches on wood furniture? Is there a certain product that is good for fixing this?

Ling answers:
Take a little lighter fluid and a soft cloth.Rub the fluid lightly into the furniture, until you no longer can see it.
Strike a match and drop it on the funiture
Poof ! No more scratches.

Laura asks…
What color should I paint my walls when I have maple wood furniture?
My room is filled with maple wood furniture and I've been doing some remodeling. New curtains and new wood shutters and new crown molding. I've been looking at some turquoise colors and some purples but I'm not sure if it will complement the wood. It's originally white. Would green or yellowish orange be better? Thanks.

Ling answers:
Greens & turquoises look great with maple. Don't go too light though - choose a color with some real body to it for the best effect. Here's one I've used a lot: Sherwin Williams 6228 Refuge. Then do your ceiling in 6224 Mountain Air. Purple would look great as your accent color.
