George asks…
Where do antique stores find their vintage furniture?
there is a store just along my street that sells some incredible 19th and 20th century furniture. however, I cannot afford many of the pieces.
whenever I browse the store, I wonder where exactly the owner finds these amazing pieces. I assume the owner attends estate sales and auctions, but what I don’t know is how and where one finds estate auctions. is there some insider knowledge?

Ling answers:
No. They are advertised HEAVILY in the classified section of the local newspapers.
I am not a fan of craigslist, bu I bet there is a category for them. They aren't secrets

Donald asks…
Is it safe to store valuable antique furniture in an attic?
I have a lot of furniture in very fine condition from the late 19th century. Is it safe to store it in my attic? To my knowledge, there are no animals up there, but would the cold/heat damage it? I am in NJ and an uninsulated attic will see a wide range of temperatures.

Ling answers:
Ken above is correct. Papa stored some exquisite antiques in an uninsulated attic in the Cleveland area which suffered significant damage as a result. Wood cracked, finishes orange peeled, joinery swelled, drawers stuck and I had to have them restored at great expense.
