William asks…

antique collectors?

I have inherited a medallion that resembles the boy scouts of america emblem but not sure if it was issued by the boy scouts of america. Can anyone tell me what it might be? I can send an email attachment pic of it.

Ling answers:

I am a collector of old things, so will be happy to help you ID your medallion. Send me a photo of the front, the back, and with the medallion lying next to a quarter or a ruler (so I can determine size). If it is shiny, place it on a dark piece of furniture or something so the detail will show through.

Nancy asks…

Why do antique collectors like things restored?

So I'm watching this Pawn Stars show, and they restored an old coca cola machine. The thing was restored and basically every part was replaced.

What's the difference between a restoration and a replica if they're just going to replace all the parts? Wouldn't collectors want the real thing, however beat up it may be?

Ling answers:

It depends on the type of item. For genuinely valuable, rare antiques, most people wouldn't want restoration, or obvious restoration. But for things like a Coca-Cola chest, it's only useful if it displays well and works. A restored version will sell for less than an original version, so it's desirable to a collector who doesn't have enough money for an all-original machine.

Donna asks…

are 8 track music tapes worth anything to antique collectors, or are they pretty much worthless.?

I just inherrited a whole bunce of 8 track music tapes, and I wanna know if they are worth anything. and where to sell them if they are.

Ling answers:

I grew up in the era of 8 track tapes and I think they are not as desirable as actual vinyl records. Depending on the groups you have some people do like them to use as decorations in game rooms etc.... Other than that they are really not worth anything to antique collectors.

Charles asks…

Where can I find old antique newspaper collectors or shops?

I have two old newspapers, one Daily Express from 1918 when the first world war stopped and one from 1872. The are both in reasonable condition and I was wondering where would be the best place to sell items like this. I feel on ebay the people who would be interested in them would miss them.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Martin.

Ling answers:

Type antique newspaper collectors into your search bar, and follow the leads.

Paul asks…

Antique collectors: What is your favorite era to collect from ?

Ling answers:

I love Victorian & Edwardian! But really like art deco & depression era things too! And the 50's are always fun! The only time period I don't like is the 60's & 70's. I didn't like it then and I don't like it now!
