Antique China Questions About Antique Collectors Book

Steven asks…
Is anyone else here an antique book collector?
If so, which is your favourite?
Mine is a 'people's edition' of 'Alice Through the Looking Glass' by Lewis Caroll - 1896.
It's not the most valuable in my collection, or the oldest but it is the book that started me collecting and has beautiful illustrations. One of the oldest is a 'Chaucer for Children' - 1875.
Correction: I meant to write that the 'Chaucer for Children' is one of the most valuable - it has colour block illustrations. I have others that are quite a bit older.

Ling answers:
I have 2 first edition books of the American author Winston Churchill (not the PM of Brittain): "Consiton" and "The Crisis" - written in the 1880's. Also "The Self Interpreting Bible" in 1911, and a newspaper: "The Globe" from July 1st, 1887.

Ruth asks…
I want to know how much an antique book is worth, can somebody help ?
This book is in very fine condition, it's title is The Rime of the Ancient Mariner in seven parts. By, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, presented by Willy Poqauy, Thomas V. Crowell & Co. New York. The letter pieces and line illustrations are by Vincent Brooks Day and Son Ltd. and there are four colour plates by Bemrose Dalziel, Ltd. at London in the year of our Lord MCMX.
This book is in very fine condition for it's age and there are no tears or stains or ripes, it is a hard cloth cover , color is green with gold lettering on front and spine a little faded, not much. It is about 15" x 12" in size.
I want to sell this book and need to know what it is worth, I know it is a beutiful collectors piece.

Ling answers:
Is it Willy Poqauy or Willy Pogany? Critical to know this.
Abebooks.com lists a Pogany edition published by Thomas Crowell as worth $5,000. Poqauy? Look carefully.
And then, there's this, from the same site...

Joseph asks…
I'm looking for more information on an antique book...?
I've searched the internet everywhere for information (popularity, collectors value, etc) on an antique book from 1894. The book is A Blameless Woman by John Strange Winter. It is the original version, burgundy hardcover with a very faded picture on the front. Published by the International news company, copyright 1894. This isn't a reprint or a new copy, its the original publishing. No one seems to know anything about it!
Any websites or personal knowledge would be much appreciated!

Ling answers:
Kayla, I can offer only generalized information and a suggestion.
Most books published in English between the 1850s and the 1940s are worth very little, regardless of their condition, regardless of whether they're still in print in other editions. A typical value might be $3 - $10. However, there are books which are exceptions, and it's possible you have one--but not very likely.
You can either identify a reputable rare book dealer and pay for an appraisal (or maybe get a best-guess estimate) or conduct repeated online searches for a book identical to yours. Start with AbeBooks, Amazon, and ebay. If and when you find one, don't pay any attention to the seller's asking price. Only the bids tell you what it's worth.

Donna asks…
How much should I sell this collector's, antique book for?
It's called "The Rubbernex in Florida" by Asa Cassidy who's also known for his paintings. This book was extremely limited, published in 1938, and was signed by the author along with a personal message to the intended recipient. It's hardcover, in pretty good condition with minor wear. It's been in my family since the '30s, but now it's in my hands to sell. I have not been able to locate another one of this title for ANY information. There are no websites about this book (including Amazon.com, which I use them for everything.) I do not want to price this through the roof, but I don't want to sell it for a ridiculously low price either. I do know it is rare, which adds to the value, and it's signed by the author himself, which obviously is a giveaway to it's monetary value, plus taking into consideration that there are literally no other copies of this book anywhere!
Any ideas??
BTW, I'm selling this on eBay, in fixed price format. This will not be in Auction style format like most other items on eBay. Thanks!!

Ling answers:
$15. Check it on www.ABEBOOKS.com. Look for other copies at www.WORLDCAT.org..

Charles asks…
Hi, I have a number of rare books I would like advice on value and a place to sell them? free services better?
Hi, just wondering if there is an antique book collector group online that may be really interested in my books? or any service for determining value of, and selling scarce and rare books, I'm in Australia so local may be better I don't know????

Ling answers:
Ladypax, you can do some online research on the titles of your books on:
www.abebooks.com
www.alibris.com
Prices given are in USD.
You could also try googling/yahooing some of the titles of your books to see what info you get.
Then depending on where you live, there are booksellers who specialise in rare, out of print and collectable books. If you could give me your general location, I could give you some contacts in your area.
What type of books do you have?
