Antique China Questions About Antique Collectibles Price Guide

Sandy asks…

Why is the price of some collectibles so much less than 10 years ago?

I found a McCoy touring car cookie jar in my mom's estate. I consulted two of Kovel's antique price guides. In the 1995 edition, the price of this item was set at $80. In the 2007 edition, the price had fallen to $29 for the same thing. What's going on?

Ling answers:

Usually a collectibles value is determined by the availability of that item on the open market. Probably what happened is the same as what you found. The price in 1995 was fairly good for your item and people brought their cookie jars out of the closets and cupboards and started to sell them. Now all these little hidden treasures are coming onto the market and are easily found and the price has come down because everyone can find them. It's the treasures that are staying hidden that are keeping their value.

Joseph asks…

David asks…

What good are price guides on antiques when people won't pay those prices?

The term "book price" intimidates potential buyers, so why are there so many price guides published? I've noticed on Ebay that things like glassware, pottery and other "collectibles" usually sell for 10 to 50% of the current book prices.

Ling answers:

A good starting point is 50 of the book value.

The truth of the matter is - It is only worth what someone will pay you for it.

Cant pay the rent with glassware and pottery.

Sandra asks…

antiques & collectables where can i find free price guides on the net.?

Ling answers:

Its not a regular place but you'd be surprised at what you can refer to on Ebay. You can look up current and also past items and what they sold for...
