Mandy asks…

I want to go to an auction?

With my mum, we always talk about going to an auction but we never go. I live in North Yorkshire, UK so any ANTIQUE auction near there would be great.
Please help.

Ling answers:

Just tell your mom you want to do more than talk about it and you actually want to go

Ling answers:

Hi! What you have is a copy of a lovely 19th c.
Painting by George Hitchcock that is located at
the Art Institute of Chicago. I found reference
to it in a December 16, 1906 issue of The New
York Times:

George Hitchcock - American, 1850-1913
Flower Girl in Holland, 1887
Oil on canvas
79.1 x 147.3 cm (31 1/8 x 58 in.)
The Art Institute of Chicago

Whoops! I missed your edit:)

The first name may be 'Pierre.' Just a guess.
Try to take a photo of it the next time you see
your Grandma so one of us can try to research
it for you.

Sandra asks…

How to get rid of mothball smell?

When my dad and I went to an auction, he bought me a very old antique trunk. Who ever owned it before us put mothballs in it and now the smell seems to be stuck. I have already tried cleaning it and spraying it with air freshner. It is an antique, so I am slightly worried about cleaning with too many chemicals. Any suggestions? Many thanks. (:

Nancy asks…

i have Antique Stove/oven simpson tappan 400 should i auction or private sale?

Ling answers:

I would try a private sale first, think you are the one who decides if it is what you are asking. If it is that old get someone to appraise it, then you will know the start price, you will be able to play with how much you sell for or not. It is always best to know what you are working with when you have an antique. My mom collects antiques, most of all her furniture is antique. Melissa

Sharon asks…

Antiques in Bangalore?

Can someone pls give me antique stores in bangalore that hold auctions. I ve been trying to find one but in vain.

Ling answers:

I'm not sure there are any, any more. But there are a couple of reasonably priced places where you can pick up stuff in Indiranagar there's one just off the 13th cross off the 100 feet road, forgot its name though. There's a lovely place called Artefacts off Victoria Road (1st cross, close to Lifestyle). There's Thar Art Gallery at the start of 100 ft rd indiranagar. Some of these places restore old furniture and also make reproductions, as well as having original Old Stuff. There's Urban Magiq in Johnson Market (next to Fanoos). There are some shops near Russell Market, down in Richards Square (opp St Mary's basilica). There must be more all over the place .. This is a big city! But these are the ones I know of and have been to.
