Collectibles: Is the Internet made the way to enjoy your hobby?
My mom takes a certain brand of old china. Back in the day, it was quite difficult to find, had scoured the antique malls and flea markets and will be happy to find even one piece. It took years to build his collection. Now that all the world, sites like eBay make it much easier to find. And with so many parts available, prices have fallen than she used to pay in a store. That's a good thing, in a way ... but is a bit taken the fun out of it. There is no longer that "thrill of the hunt" he made his hobby so much fun. Has anyone else found this to be the case?
Well, yes and no. I still want to see and touch things to collect. I prefer go to antique malls, flea markets, garage sales, etc. I'm not one for buying antiques and collectibles on the Internet, but it is my daughter. For example, months ago I was looking for a specific rare books, and my husband and I check every stand in those places and have fun doing it. I knew that one day I would find it and it would be one of those "look, there it is!" moments. But I was disappointed one Christmas when one of my gifts was the book. Why? Because my husband told my son to find online and buy it. The search was over and I liked the book as much as I would have done if I did. This occurred a couple of times with other "hunting" and finally had to tell you to stop doing that, that ruined the fun of searching.
