19thc Goldmine excavations in New Zealand Discover the treasures of the Victorian era
San Francisco, California - November 27, 2007 - the Martha gold mine at Waihi in the North Island of New Zealand was a major producer of gold and silver between 1888, when mining began and 1952 when the mine closed. Pumphouse structure was classified as a building of national importance by the new trust Zealand Historic Places in 1970.
Due to the instability of the earth, the Cornish Pumphouse was in danger of
catastrophic collapse and was supported two feet off the perpendicular and growing. The decision was taken in late 2005 to change the pump room to a safe place to cut the pump room about 4 meters (13 feet) below ground regulator surface.Using concrete beams covered with steel sheets and stainless steel the 1,800 tons, suspended with flat jacks sitting on Teflon pads with lots of lubricant, then pulled with horizontal hydraulic cylinders. The change involved some 30 meters (approx. 30 meters) to the south, descending, then a 300 meter (approx. 300 m) westward journey to the new school.
As a condition of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust archaeological
consent to the transfer, archaeological monitoring, research and Registration took place along the south side of the hill. Since January 2006, a series of archaeological investigations have occurred related to the relocation of The Cornish Pumphouse. These
research that also included excavations around the pump room were done by consultant archaeologist Ray Hooker Arcsearch

A wide variety of arts related to ancient mining, both the tools and machine parts were recovered. A trash pit from this site almost exclusively produced liquor and bottles of pain reliever, still full of Aspros!
Cleaning, sorting and cataloging of library material
recovery took weeks. Nearly 5,200 pieces of material home have been inventoried. These include dozens of tin match boxes dating from 1895 to the First World War, a silver sovereign keeper, used to store half and full sovereigns (unfortunately empty), pocket watches, metal cans of various types, ornaments and a negative plate printers, 1900
calendar, name some of the metal material recovered. A whole range of bottles from the late 19 to the 1940 includes a few bottles principles intact. bottle manufacturers including British, Australian, American and New Zealand officials.
However, the largest collection of material consists of ceramics, mainly tableware. Some were intact or almost everything, but most were in fragments. Many had brand identification and classification manufacturers of these items proved time consuming and sometimes frustrating, and about 50 manufacturers have been identified so far, especially with the help of Marks4Antiques.com

The most ancient of date, close to the pump room covers all parts of a
earthenware plate dating between 1846 - 1854, when the ceramic Staffordshire P. Holdcroft closed. All parts of a ceramic plate with Grindley Globe Waihi Hotel monogram on it, plus many other fragments, were also located. Of particular interest were the pieces of china dating from around 1912, with a view looking east of Waihi's main street, made by Ceramic Victoria, Austria (Schmidt & Co). Fortunately all the pieces of the side plate were recovered and several others have been partially rebuilt. The set seems have formed cups saucers and side plates.
Although most are made of clay pottery, some very good
bone china has also recovered from Royal Doulton vases them.
Most of China collection is dominated by Britain and other European countries
manufacturers, manufacturers of fine however, several of Japan / Nippon also
identified as well as goods from China and other parts of Asia. Most of the pieces for an allocation period was possible, the date of ca 1890 - 1930, although a number of pre 1890 pieces have also been recovered.
The wide variety of materials recovered in the last 10 months from Martha Hill is currently in the final phase of analysis. This will allow some ideas about internal affairs and mining principles the last century.
